Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Did you know on Thanksgiving day the number home cooking fires doubles then the average day? In fact more then 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving day. So when the turkey is in the oven and you find yourself sitting on the couch watching the Macy’s day parade or the football game, remember these helpful hints:

  • Keep potholders and food wrappers at least 3 feet away from any heat source.
  • Make sure all ovens, stoves and ranges have been turned off if you leave your home.
  • Remember to set timers to keep track of turkeys and other food items that require longer cooking times.
  • Turn handles of pots and pans on stove inward to avoid accidents.
  • Wear tighter fitting clothing with shorter sleeves when cooking.
  • Remember: After your guests leave designate a responsible adult to walk around the home making sure all candles and smoking materials are extinguished.

Even with the best precautions, accidents can happen. Be sure that all smoke detectors in your home have working batteries, that your fire extinguisher is within reach, and if something should happen keep calm and call the fire department.
